MDF furniture: What to know when cleaning

In recent years, MDF furniture has gained prominence in the market. One of its advantages is precisely its durability — which can be further extended if the furniture is cleaned correctly. In times of pandemic, where we are taking extra care when cleaning the house, we have put together some tips for cleaning your furniture:

  • The most recommended material for cleaning is a sponge (use the soft part);
  • Do not over-moisten the sponge (just enough to remove dirt from the surface, but not so much that water accumulates). Leaving the furniture wet can cause blisters and swelling;
  • Don't rub hard. Avoid excesses. MDF is more sensitive than wood;
  • The ideal is to clean every day, not letting dust and other dirt accumulate.
  • Every 15 days, deeper cleaning is recommended, with neutral detergent (a little) mixed with water on a cloth or with silicone-based furniture polish (colorless);
  • MDF furniture does not require the use of many cleaning products: in addition to the sponge, you can just use a damp cloth with water to clean and a clean cloth to dry afterwards. Neutral soap can also be used if it has stains (especially in the kitchen) or coconut soap diluted in water. Alcohol can be used, but not in excess, especially on kitchen furniture, which may have grease stains. And multipurpose products tend to yellow surfaces, so avoid them.
  • Do not use: abrasive products, non-neutral detergents, soaps, sponges (rough part), steel wool, loofahs, soaked cloths.

Extra tip: avoid leaving the furniture in a place where it gets direct sunlight. Heat can cause deformities in color and structure.
